A day before, Megan Mulrooney received an email from the Holland College Library about the dominoes game night being held there.

Mulrooney is a quiet person and she was looking to come out of her shell a little more, so she thought going to this activity would help socialize with others, as she likes the atmosphere of playing dominoes.

“Hey, I know how to play that game. Maybe I could try it out and see where it leads me,” she thought.

Mulrooney has been playing dominoes since she was young. She would often play it with others during the winter time inside her family’s cabin in Newfoundland.

“It was kind of a cabin favourite back in the day. We would head over into the cabin when it was snowing and we would play some dominoes around the table,” she said.

Mulrooney is a first-year Journalism and Communications (post-graduate certificate) student at Holland College. She was one of seven people who attended dominoes game night at the Regis and Joan Duffy Library inside the Prince of Wales campus of Holland College on Tues., Jan. 16, 2024.

The activity was intended as a way to facilitate students to get to know each other and have fun, said Holland College librarian Emily MacIsaac.

“We know that dominoes is a very popular game for many folks, so it’s just we brought all our sets in wanted to get people together,” MacIsaac said.

“It’s easy to transport. It doesn’t take as long as a board game. It’s pretty accessible, there’s tons of different ways you can play.”

Although not necessarily a one-time activity, MacIsaac also said that it’s part of a series of games to be played every week based on the interests of students in the college.
