Holland College student pleads guilty to impaired driving

March 21, 2024

A Holland College student was convicted of impaired driving in provincial court today.

Kohl Gage Abbott, a first-year Sport and Recreation Management student, pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol and having a blood alcohol level almost twice above the legal limit of 0.08. He was handed a suspended three-day jail sentence with probation, along with a fine of $1,000 with a $300 surcharge.

Abbott, 18, has no prior criminal record.

During sentencing, Abbott’s lawyer requested he serve his jail sentence on the weekends, as he also has classes on the weekday.

“Certainly, (Abbott) is remorseful for this, and wants to make positive change in his life,” his lawyer said.

The incident took place on the night of Jan. 20, 2024, when Stratford RCMP received a call from someone at a party in Mermaid. The caller saw Abbott leaving the party drunk in a white Honda Civic.

Police then spotted Abbott failing to stop at a red light at the Charlottetown Bypass on Brackley Point Road. He was then stopped by police, who noticed he was glossy-eyed, and his vehicle smelled of liquor.

Abbott agreed to a roadside breathalyzer test, which he failed. He was arrested and taken to the RCMP’s Maypoint detachment.

There, Abbott underwent another breathalyzer test, which he also failed.

He is expected to report to the provincial correction centre on March 22.
