A Charlottetown man was convicted yesterday of possessing a deadly weapon.
Donald William Cree pleaded guilty in Provincial Court to possession of a weapon for dangerous use. He was handed a suspended sentence and a probation of 12 months. All fines, including surcharges, were waived due to Cree being unhoused.
He has no prior criminal record.
During sentencing, Cree’s lawyer said that his client is ready to take responsibility for his actions “at the earliest opportunity.”
“It is fair … considering the aggression shown towards Mr. Cree for the sake of two chocolate bars,” his lawyer said.
The incident took place on the night Feb. 1, 2024, when Charlottetown police received reports of a commotion at Canadian Tire on Babineau Avenue.
According to the complainant, Cree attempted to steal two chocolate bars from the store. When he was intercepted by the loss prevention officer (LPO) on duty, he took out a knife, though he threw it out of harm’s way.
When police arrived, Cree claimed he was assaulted by the LPO, though he admitted to taking out the knife. He also had another concealed knife.
He was arrested and charged with attempted shoplifting and possession of a deadly weapon.
